What happens before the play?

  • Henry Bolingbroke is banished from England by his cousin, King Richard II. When Henry returns to claim his father’s inheritance, Richard sees it as an attack and abdicates the throne, making Bolingbroke King Henry IV.

What happens in the play?

  • The Percy family (Northumberland, Worcester, and Hotspur) were friends of Bolingbroke but think his claiming of the English throne to be treasonous and insulting. The set about to build a coalition of disaffected Welsh, Scottish, and English to oppose the new king and place Edmund Mortimer on the throne.
  • Meanwhile, Henry’s eldest son, Prince Hal, is ignoring his princely duties by carousing with Sir John Falstaff and his followers at the Tavern in Eastcheap.
  • As the rebellion grows in strength, King Henry and Prince Hal reconcile and muster their forces to meet the enemy at Shrewsberry.
  • Battles, arguments, friendships, and explorations of honor ensue.
